What would you do if a storm caused the sea to overtop the sea wall and flood our local area? How would you respond? What would your priorities be?
Find out what two young women did when they found themselves in a similar situation:
Responses to natural hazards
There are three key responses to natural hazards:
fatalism
adaptation
fear
Responses to natural hazards
Fatalism (acceptance):
Such hazards are natural events that are part of living in an area. Some
communities would go as far as to say that they are ‘God’s will’.

Adaptation:
People see that they can prepare for, and therefore survive the event(s) by prediction, prevention, and/or protection, depending upon the economic and technological circumstances of the area in question.

Adaptation:

Fear:
The perception of the hazard is such that people feel so vulnerable to an event that they are no longer able to face living in the area and move away to regions perceived to be unaffected by the hazard.
Management of natural hazards
When a natural hazard strikes it leads to:
primary impacts - immediate effect i.e. buildings falling down
secondary impacts - after the event i.e. disease
Management of natural hazards
TALKING POINT: You studied the Haiti earthquake at GCSE. What were the primary & secondary impacts of this earthquake?
Key ideas
relating to the management of natural hazards:
community preparedness/risk sharing
integrated risk management
mitigation
monitoring
prediction
prevention
protection
reconstruction
rehabilitation
relief
resilience
TASK:
Using variety of sources, research and create a short report using Google Docs on the key ideas relating to the management of natural hazards (listed above). Include a copy of a model of the ‘process of risk management’, the Park Response Model and The Hazard Management Cycle and give a written explanation of each.
